Antony MacRow-Wood
President, Board of Directors
Antony MacRow-Wood studied Politics and Economic and Social History at York University before moving to Bristol to train as a Chartered Accountant. Once there he worked first for Deloittes and then Rolls Royce (aero-engines). He trained for ministry at Cambridge studying at Westcott House and the University. After ordination in 1992 he served as a curate and team vicar in Urban Priority Area parishes in Swindon and Weymouth before moving to Poole in 2004 to become a Team Rector and then subsequently Archdeacon of Dorset in 2015. He has a long-standing involvement with the Credit Union movement after helping set up a credit union in his first parish and been President of First Dorset Credit Union. He served on the Board of the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd. (ABCUL) from 2002 to 2012 and was National President for the final three years. He stepped down from the ABCUL Board to help bring to fruition the plans for Churches’ Mutual Credit Union.
Nigel Bourne
Vice-President, Board of Directors
Nigel's main work focus is as Vicar of Chalk in Kent, a post he has held for over 18 years. He is married to Sue who is a qualified teacher but who mainly acts as an unpaid curate. They have one grown up child at university and they know, at first hand, how helpful CMCU is in saving for the future and offering loans at fair rates. Brought up on a council estate and attending local state comprehensive schools, Nigel won a place at St John’s College, Oxford where he gained a degree in Engineering Science. He was an Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy before ordination and also holds a Masters degree in Business Administration with a specialism in Finance. He has been a member of his Diocesan Finance Committee and a Trustee of a Christian charity working with vulnerable children in Zambia. He is currently a member of the Church of England Pensions Board and is Vice-President of CMCU.
Sheila Nicoll
Secretary, Board of Directors
Sheila Nicoll is an Elder at St Columba’s Church of Scotland in London and is a secretary of the CMCU. She has been Head of Public Policy at Schroders since September 2014. She is a board member of the European Funds and Asset Management Association. From September 2013 to September 2014 she was senior advisor on regulatory matters at EY in September 2013. In 2009 she was appointed Director of Conduct Policy of the Financial Services Authority with responsibility for policy relating to the conduct of all types of firms regulated by the FSA. She led work on such issues as the FSA’s Retail Distribution Review, its Mortgage Market Review and implementation of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive. She joined the FSA in 2007 as Director of Retail Firms Division at the Financial Services Authority, where her division supervised a wide range of firms, including banks; mortgage providers and intermediaries; insurance companies and intermediaries; asset managers and investment advisers. Prior to joining the FSA, she was Deputy Chief Executive of the Investment Management Association (IMA), and before that worked for the London Stock Exchange. . She is a modern languages graduate (French and German).
Jeremy Oakes
Treasurer, Board of Directors
Having originally trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in London in the early 1970s, Jeremy changed tacks to pursue ordination in 1978 in the Church of England. In the ensuing years, he served in 5 parishes in Leicester, Winchester and Salisbury dioceses and also on various committees. In particular, he was a member of the Diocesan Boards of Finance (DBF) in Leicester and Salisbury, latterly becoming Chairman of Salisbury’s Board for 6 years until 2006. After 36 years in full-time parish ministry he is now retired and lives with his wife Alison in Corfe Castle in Dorset.
Sue Howarth
Member, Board of Directors & Money Laundering Reporting Officer
Sue represents the Methodist Church on the Board. A qualified accountant with experience in tax and compliance. She was previously compliance officer and company secretary for Montagu Private Equity, and CFO for Advantage Capital Limited. Council member and chair of the Audit Committee for the Central Finance Board of the Methodist Church.
Uell Kennedy
Member, Board of Directors
After a science degree at university, Uell worked for a short time with young people. He then joined the Building Society industry and after extensive retail experience, he specialised in the life, unit trust and general insurance sector. He then spent a few years as Marketing Manager specialising in pension and general insurance products and attended Bradford University Management Centre. After further regional retail experience in Banking, Uell then managed a team of specialist wealth advisers and was a qualified Investment manager. Uell became a Methodist Local Preacher in the early 1990’s. In 2001, Uell joined Bradford Diocese as a Development Manager looking after stewardship, fundraising advice, church tourism and resources for Parishes. In 2007, Uell was ordained and is both an SSM and an Associate Presbyter in the Methodist Church. Currently with the Diocese of Leeds, Uell specialises in development work, fundraising and stewardship advice. He is an accredited trainer in the Institute of Fundraising. Involved with CMCU since long before launch.
Stephen Morgan
Member, Board of Directors
Stephen Morgan began his working life with a short service commission with the Royal Navy before training to be a tax inspector. He explored a vocation to the priesthood before entering the accountancy profession as a tax manager then partner for thirteen years. He moved on from there to lead a number of businesses before becoming the Oeconomus/Financial Secretary of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth in 2004. To this role he has recently added leadership of the Diocesan Academy Conversion Project. In recent years he has also found time to study theology, recently completing his Doctorate and become a married Deacon helping in parishes in the New Forest. Stephen is also a non-executive director of Catholic National Mutual Ltd, the Church’s insurer.
Nick Mottershead
Member, Board of Directors & Compliance Officer
Nick has been involved with the CMCU from the early stage authorisation discussions with the PRA and FCA and is a member of the Credit & Risk Committee, Chair’s the IT Committee and is the CMCU’s Compliance Officer. He has over 25 years’ experience as an executive, non-executive and business advisor having led various businesses and worked with and advised many boards and senior executives of both public and private organisations around the world. He trained as a Chartered Accountant at EY which culminated in his appointment as their youngest Global Practice Leader. He has spent the last 10 years as Chair, CEO or CFO, of various privately backed innovative new technology businesses. He has also had various voluntary charity roles as trustee, treasurer and independent examiner over many years. Since Ordination in 2015, he has been a part-time, self-supporting Associate Curate at St Olave’s and St Katharine’s churches in the City of London, He is a fellow of the ICAEW, has degrees in Cybernetics and Control Engineering and in Theology and Ministry. Nick was born in Wales and now lives in Beckenham, with his wife Claire, and 3 young boys.
Jeremy Palmer
Member, Board of Directors & Chair of Credit & Risk Committee
Jeremy Palmer has been part of the CMCU project almost from its beginning in 2010, and belongs to a parish in the Anglican diocese of Southwark. His work experience covers regulatory policy, including for credit unions, at the former Financial Services Authority, and he is familiar with the challenges and opportunities faced by the wider credit union sector. He currently works part –time as Head of Financial Policy for the Building Societies Association. At CMCU he chairs the Credit and Risk Committee, and was re-elected to CMCU’s Board for a three year period at the first AGM in January 2016
Dave Thomson
Chair, Supervisory Committee
Dave Thomson Chairs CMCU's Supervisory Committee, the credit union equivalent of an audit committee. Following university (Salford) where he read Politics and History, Dave qualified as an accountant with the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. He is an experienced Internal Audit manager, initially within local government but mostly in financial services with the Co-operative Insurance Society and, later, the Co-operative Bank (following the merger of the two businesses). Dave has served as a member of the Audit Committee (2001 - 2016) for the Co-operative College, an educational charity. Ordained in 2007, Dave is currently Vicar of Ainsworth (a parish on the edge of the West Pennine Moors within the Diocese of Manchester) and Borough Dean for Bury. (Photo - Phil Taylor)
John Ellis
Member, Supervisory Committee
John was brought up in Exeter and was a teenage Church Treasurer. He was awarded a Senior Scholarship by King’s College, Cambridge, and received a First Class Honours degree in Economics. He worked for the Bank of England for twenty years in a wide variety of roles. When the Financial Services Authority was established, he was one of the first Heads of Department there. From 2000-12 he was employed by the Methodist Church. Initially he worked on the Church’s relationship with business and economics. He was later appointed one of four Strategic Leaders and led the whole Methodist staff team. John has been an Elder of the United Reformed Church since 1981. He is the Treasurer of the URC and was also Moderator of the General Assembly from 2013 to 2016. He is currently Treasurer of the Council for World Mission, a partnership of Churches in 40 countries with roots in the British missionary movement.
